This seems like a good time for everyone in America to read Pat Palmer’s book, The Mouse, The Monster, and Me.
Because, we’re being sucked into bully reality again—along with the rest of the world—and this book has the antidote. Here are some of Sue Ramá’s wonderful illustrations about monsters…
And mice…
And ways of getting what you want by being assertive….
You know, using our words, not our militia.
Here are some reviews!

Speaking of treating others as human beings…
If you’re in Oakland, please come see my talk next Wednesday at the Oakland Library. Joaquin Miller was America's superstar poet at the end of the 19th century, and his novel, Life Among the Modocs, about living with the first peoples of Mount Shasta during the horrific Indian Wars, was the first book that portrayed native Americans as regular people, not “savages” or “noble savages.” He is still facing the criticism that followed him through his life. This is also the first book that urges environmental stewardship. The cabin where he lived out his later years, (during which he planted tens of thousands of trees and instigated the planting of millions more,) is right up the hill from my house, and his land is now a park I write about in my blog, Walkin’ With Joaquin.
I dressed as him for Halloween.
Speaking of poets who plant trees…
If you are a person who racks up mileage, please consider fling my friend Amos White to Boston next week where he’s been booked to do a full-length TED talk. Amos is this generation’s Johnny Appleseed/Joaquin Miller, with a mission to plant 100KTrees4Humanity. His Linkedin Feed is a great follow. And last week, he wrote:
There is a lot on the line in this election.
And climate is the unspoken candidate on the ballot.
This year, our days were hotter and America's urban cities lost more than 30 million trees-- trees that would keep our air clean and our communities cool.
Our message to "act now" is resonating. With your help, we are growing more community trees. We won’t stop fighting to protect our for our rights to clean air and with cooler communities and schools.
Amos was in New York for Climate Week last month to be added to the Grist 50 list of climate innovators to watch, and was honored by Bill Clinton, President Biden, Prince Harry and more!!! [Pix] And next week he’s been invited to do a TED talk at MIT….that’s a lot of travel! Contact Amos if you can help him with mileage (or a place to stay) or make a donation. He’s a hot speaker. (And a cool poet, too!)
Let’s keep on keeping on keeping it together, awesome peeps.
