Today is the day I’m launching PR for my Oaktoberfest offering this year. Oakland’s beer festival could be better connected to its German roots, missing opportunities for the big fun rooted in the Bavarian spirit.
In my 2020 movie, The Dirndl Diaspora, which I hope will someday be produced as a play with awesome costumes, I explore all sorts of themes around being German, especially of mixed race. Did you know:
No one called Germans Germans in Germany until the 19th century, though those immigrating from that war-torn region were called Germans in the countries to which they emmigrated?
Pretty much all the kitsch we associate with Germany: cuckoo clocks, pretzels, lederhosen and beer steins, are emblematic of Bavaria, the southernmost of its 16 states?
Germany was exemplary in its reparations, and it’s a crime to deny the Holocaust, use or share the swastika, support Nazism, or say nice things about Hitler?
The German word for safety pin is “Sicherheitsnadel”? Yes, with a capital S!
The characters discuss these and many other interesting things in my almost-award-winning cult couture comedy, which I hope everyone sees!
So here’s what will happen at
Dirndl Day at Oaktoberfest! (10/5/24)
An all-day showing at Dimond Library all day with facilitated discussions about heritage and healing;
A dirndl fashion show with emcee Aja Hruby De Coudreaux and celebrity judges; and
A polka brawl at the hip hop dance battle!
All the info is on this page — please check it out and share!
I'm still looking for:
dancers for the easy 4-minute routine,
volunteers to help with stuff and stuff, and
celebrity judges!
If you think you can be there, say you're coming on Facebook! If you’re excited about the idea but can’t make it to Oakland for this crazy community crush, you can always
host a watching of The Dirndl Diaspora at your own Oktoberfest celebration;
host a #DirndlDiversity fashion show;
MAKE a dirndl for my play! (Scholarships available!)
and/or donate a prize for the fashion show! (A weird Bavarian souvenir? A gift certificate for gourmet pretzels? A vintage apron? A signed photograph of Mad King Ludwig?)
Respond to me asap if you want to play!

Please forward to a friend in your own Oktoberfest community!
I have a weird German wife I would be willing to offer up as entertainment.
Sounds like a great time!
